hands sewing

Artist Statement

As a child I remember watching my great grandmother crocheting and my grandmother sewing. They would spend hours creating beautiful items for the house or clothes for the family. Gradually their work began to weave itself into my life. Fiber is the connection for me with my forebears. It is a medium which aligns me with a strong tradition within my maternal anscestry.

In a larger picture, fiber is the common thread that holds all of humanity together. It clothes the backs of all mankind, regardless of class, culture or geographical location. Within the fiber, it acts like a cellular memory. I see myself as a person who artfully records memories and how they are tied together by a common thread. From there I also see the conflicts, oxymorons, the words not spoken within these fibers.

Other influences for my art are contemporary artists who work with non-traditional materials. Fiber, prints, and found objects are the materials that play an important role in motivating concept and form. Through this process, I hope to awaken within the viewer, thoughts that will connect their own personal histories.
